Planned to go to Hatteras this past week, but Irene messed that up. Instead, I waited until the last minute find out where it was most likely to be windy. Cabarete, Dominican Republic looked good and, indeed, I rode every day including arrival day. Landed at 2, on the water by 4.
Huge kite community there. It can get crowded at Kite Beach, but there are plenty of other options. The water inside the reef is choppy. Especially on the outward (right foot forward) tack. This is the directions I do my tricks so it was frustrating for me until I discovered the reef. Nice swells out there with smooth water inbetween. Its about 400 yards offshore, so a mistake out there could be costly.
In my opinion, its not a good place to take starter lessons or for a novice to kite. Once you are up and riding and staying upwind is better.
There good restaurants. Food and accommodations reasonable. Airfare is steep. There is quite the bar scene in town and one can stay there or just out of town where its quieter. You don't need a car. There is a plethora of guys on small motorcycles available to take you wherever. A half mile trip in to town costs 25 pesos (65 cents). After 6PM prices double. There's plenty to do when there's no wind. SUP, SCUBA, surf, beach volleyball ...
All in all, not my favorite spot, but I'll go back.
