Full Version: Strawberry Island
Kite U.S. Forums > Industry Resources & Information > Resources > Travel
Accesible only by boat, Strawberry Island is another fine option for kiteboarding on Lk. St. Clair. Positioned as the eastern peninsular collar of Anchor Bay the north end, it is nicely exposed to N, NW, W, SW, S, and even SE winds.

Strawberry Island's waters to be a bit cooler as the Middle Channel of the St. Clair River is nearby and brings in chilly currents from Lk. Huron. It is also shallow, approx. waist deep for hundreds of meters in some directions, miles in others. 5 to 10'' chop here is the norm although nice ramps form out in the lake and if you like flat water you do not have to go far to find glass.

Launching and landing options vary. The shallow water makes boat launches a breeze and allows you to set yourself up in the best spot for any particular direction. There is also a small beach that can accomodate up to two maybe three kites to be rigged up but you must still launch from the water due to the proximity of large trees. And the sand gets darn hot on sunny days.

is there a hotel on the island. How about a ferry?

Is this still a good spot by boat as of August 2005? (water level, etc.)
Would you reccommend it to a new guy like me?
I assume the weekdays would be the only option, due to boat traffic?
Do you have anymore spots only accessible by boat you have tried?

Would you mind if I add this spot to our site under Lake St Clair Spots? I will put courtesy of Detroit Kiteboarding?

Would this be a good spot to train some brand new boaters to the sport and would you be interested in training them? (I might have a couple interested)

Do you have anymore kiteboarding spots in Michigan I could get from you to post on our new tab "Other MI Spots"? I want to make our site a resource for as many MI spots as I can. On these I would also add "Courtsey of Detroit Kiteboarding". I have Belle River, Michell's Bay, Harsens, Metro, Tawas, Lexington and Port Huron so far.
Turtle .... the island is still rideable but it is so tight there I would prefer that it does not get listed.
No problem, safety first!
