Stormboarding is holding their annual GPS kite speed rankings again, and two guys have already posted their speeds.

1
Michael Kaspar
47.6mph
Switzerland
skis Speed 2 6m
11/18

2
Patrick Anderson
46.5mph
Alberta
skates
Kitewing 5.5*
11/24

Last year I posted a speed of 44.5MPH, which was #28 in the ranking. This year I hope to at least break 50. The top speed was 63.4mph.

For those of you who ride snowboard and don't like the ice, how about building a simple board with one steel edge? I tried to do that once, but made the mistake of using ski bindings and boots.

I'd like to see more locals getting into the rankings this year.

Last year at the Kite Derby in Traverse City Steve from Metro Detroit had 53.2 mph on Dave Clark's GPS.

Sorry I missed it. I should have been there. I'll try to make it if it doesn't conflict with the Erie Kites on the Ice Festival.

What is this Erie Kites on the Ice Festival you speak of?

A three day event on the bay at Presque Isle organized by Lee Sedgewick. Kite skiers from all over the Midwest come to fly together.

Turtle, you have it wrong. Steve didn't go that fast. I have it down that he went 40.5mph, on a snowboard which is FAST. Skis or skates are the ticket to go fast, check the previous rankings boards are usually barely in the top 10.

That's right, the 53 mph was when I took the GPS for a ride in the car.

Speaking of Kite Derby, Bring it on!

Scored a good session today with the GPS, I went 42mph with a 10m Pulse2 and a snowboard. the wind was blowing about 20-25 and the snow was 6" of wind packed snow. I didn't think the snow was going to be fast but it was.

It should put me in the top 20 for this season so far. and top speed for a snowboard this year. I'm only a few mph off the top speed for a snowboard.

Where were you riding at?
Turtle
Dave Clark from Traverse City now has the highest recorded MPH in Michigan. See the link below in the KiteMI Forum.

Thanks Saul. It was a fast run, but felt very comfortable. I don't think 60 is possible on a board but I'm going to try to get to 50mph.

To answer the question of where I was riding. I was out on South Lake Leelanau. which also happens to be the site of the TC Kite Derby.

I just read that a german kiter broke the all out water speed record for the 500m run. This was unofficial, but used GPS and doppler shift sensors so is deadly accurate. For about 11 secs of the run he was doing 54 kts and his ave over the whole run was 50.9 kts.
He was riding a home made half-moon type board and an off the shelf 9m kite...blowing between 30-35kts.

So my question is why aren't the ice and snow speeds higher?? the drag coefficients have to be lower, no?

54 kts is 62 mph.

The top speed at Stormboarding last year was 63mph.

I think the difference is we are all a buch of amateurs, though very skilled, and this guy was a pro.

Also, ice is difficult to get bite on. I think for next year I might build a small kite boat with steel blades, a very wide, low stance. Stormboarding allows just about anything to be used, as long as its a kite on ice.

Lake Leelanau is a long way for me to drive, and by the looks of it, I may not get good enough ice this year. Is there someplace a bit closer that will be good in Michigan? If not, I'm willing to drive up there for a long weekend, or even a week off.

You could have used a garbage bag and pair of ice skates last night.

Crazy. 35 degree temperature drop and gusts near 70mph.

We had a porta john blow over a mile last night across bean fields on a job, Im going to try and sell it to turtle as " the next big thing" in kite boarding.
Turtle
I will take it!

speaking of things getting blown over check this out:

Some train cars got blown off the tracks and floated into the Sandusky Bay early this morning. Dunno about you guys but I think it'd make an excellent kicker.

Now who's crazy enough to get in the water and ride right now? tongue.gif
