Brian,

It sounds like a great event. How are the riding conditions up there? Can you please update everyone on the conditions are the event date nears.

I sure will keep everyone informed as we get closer to the event we still have not picked the location due to some odd ice this year but we should know on that by the end of next week.

If anyone needs a hotel we got a block of rooms under Grand Bay Kite at the Motel 6 in Traverse City. Rooms 41.39 Friday and Saturday 37.79 for Sunday 231 938-3002.

If you are going to come up please go to the event site www.kitederby.com and make sure to registure so we know how many people we need to plan on.

Thanks

Brian

We are getting snow and our favorite lake is now completely frozen across with 2+ inches of ice on it so we may end up there if we get some more ice build up in the next 5 days or so otherwise we will be on Lake Skegamog which has a good solid 6+ inches and with daytime temps not even hitting 30 we should have good ice conditions in alot of places up this way

I can't wait to have everyone up here

Brian

Dave Clark and I went out to check ice on Lake Leelanau for 3 hours today and we have 3 spots that will rock for the event with really good ice so we are getting ready to roll for this weekend so rally up your buddies and get up here and kite this weekend with us

Brian,

I am planning to come up this weekend but I am going to drive up Sat morning. Do I necessarily have to register if I won't compete? I haven't been kiteboarding for very long so I'd just come up to ride a bit becasue conditions in DTW suck.

Is there only ice or some snow (~ how much) on the lake you are palling to ride?

Thanks

Cornelius
Turtle_merged
Dave & Brian, is it offically on Lake Leelanau?

We can still get a house to rent right on this lake, so if it is here I want to book it.

Please let me know

John

the wind forcast for the weekend is a nice 15-20 all weekend but it has alot of west in it so i am going to check a different spot on the east side of the lake out tonight to make sure the ice is good there if so we will be good with anything but an east wind which is pretty uncommon for us this launch is about 2 miles south of our number one choice which doesnt have good ice but the southern and northen parts of the lake have been frozen for over a month and and bingum park the ice just filled in last week so there is only 2-3 inches there we are also checking out Glen Lake this afternoon.

So if the ice is solid at Lakeshore Road Access then we will probly still shoot for Lake Leelanau across the lake at Salon Park the ice was a good 9-10 inches so if it is solid across the entire south end like that we will be rocking out on Lake Leelanau.

also if you are going to show up and ride we would like to have you register even if you dont wanna race we are just trying to get a decent head count to give timberlee so they know about how many people to expect.

Also please make sure you bring a helmet up with you, NO HELMET = NO RIDING with us

Thanks

The event site is at the end of E Lakeview Hills Rd, this gives us great access to the south end of South Lake Leelanau.

Complete directions are posted on the event site

Brian call the shop if you need more info

I just secured a huge rental house right by the event site on Lake Leelanau. I read the owner the directions from Dave at H2O and she said it will be almost right in front of our pad. What a BONUS, kite out the front door.

If anyone who knows me and/or Mark and needs a place for Friday and/or Saturday call me at 586-201-4603. I would like to get 1-2 more to keep the cost down for all of us. I will be with my wife and son & Mark will be with his pregnant wife. So low key here, the Turtle will be laying low. Most of the kiters I know from Detroit should not be around little children or women for that matter. Hopefully Mark knows of a couple people!

The Weather for the weekend looks SWEETTTTTTTTTTTTTT!

See everyone Friday.

I am still hanging around in upper Michigan at Boyne Mountain this week. Off to Nubs Knob on Thursday and finally home to snowless Detroit on Sunday.

FRI
We arrived around 3pm Friday to 18 inches of fresh snow and a 3600 square foot rental house overlooking the Kite Derby location. I did not waste anytime and headed right out on the lake (walked down the hill). 3-4 of the Traverse City clan were already riding. Jason and I rigged up the smallest we had (3M & 5M Slinshot foils).

Jason and I both got worked on these small kites. I had flash backs of my Harsen's Island Smackdown, but in 18in of powder. Dave from H2O checked the wind range the day after and it was 25 gusting to 40+. I wondered why when we were walking onto the lake the Traverse City guys were walking off laughing. I just figured they were afraid if a little wind.

SAT
Another 4-6 inches fell Friday night and the wind mellowed to a perfect 10-20. I rode my 8M Slingshot foil all day. I was the 2nd one out and the last one in.

SUN
Wind was stronger 20+, but steady all morning. I rode my 5M Slingshot foil and it was just enough. I got a chance to fly an Ozone Access 6M and rode this demo for a couple hours. It was nice having the ability to depower and power up (got to get one of these).

Attending from Detroit was Mark, Karl, Melissa, Eric, Jason, Cornelius and a couple more. I counted 15+ kites flying at one time on Sat with another 15+ on the ground.

I have an internet connection up here and will try and post a bunch of pictures tonight on www.KiteMI.com. Eric has some great video footage and I won't get that up until I get back to Detroit next week.

Brian from Grand Bay Kite and Dave from H2O Kiter put on one hell of an event (A++++++++). They had demo kites for everyone to ride, a fire by the registration tent, hot coco and a great location site. YOU GUYS ROCK!

When I grow up I am moving to Traverse City.

Off to the mountain I go!

My Summary: FRI
Arrived late afternoon, sessioned with T's B5 til nightfall, 10M would have been suicide, blizzard conditions and over lit on a B5, gnarly stuff but a good decompression session to start the weekend.

SAT
Cobwebs and if I recall first one out. 3-4 sessions in epic snowkiting conditions. New kite tests.

SUN
More cobwebs, body abused, 2nd one out to start day, 10M all day with a lot of gas! Couple of the best crashes of the weekend, maybe these took place on Sat? Bailed early when the body said it's time to leave. My wife Cae caught all festivities from the inside out from the Turtle mansion and was a trooper, she got to know some good people. Good group at home base overall. Great to snowkite with the classics BK and Skip and looking forward to catch westside big lake sessions this Spring/Summer, overall I was at peace with the elements, many classic moments. Thanks to Brian and Dave for putting this deal on. It's nice to get away every now and again and this weekend ranks high in the good times category.
