The KiteWing is easier to learn and handle than windsurfing or kitesurfing gear. Itís also very safe for the people around, since there are no lines. The wing is also TOTALLY depowerable, since you have direct control to the wind. (holding the wind in your hands) Compared to windsurfing rigs a KiteWing covers easily 4 windsurfing sail sizes (which often requires two different masts).

With the Gulf Coast threatened by the BP oil spill environmental disaster, there have been non-profits as well as concerned citizens who are applying their expertise in monitoring and mitigating this catastrophe.

We found a very cool site where students launch high-altitude balloons as well as towed kites outfitted with cameras to get aerial imagery of the shifting slick in the Gulf, helping to monitor its position.

This is a great example of how kiting technologies can be utilized for research, education, and environmental applications.

I've been having a great winter snowkiting the hay fields of West Michigan. As a long time skier and snowboarder, finding the untracked powder is what it's about. There's nothing like gliding across the untracked expanses of hay fields. I like frozen lakes too, but it's always eerie to hear the ice creak and groan.

Every time we go for a drive, I'm on the look for those huge open fields...gives one a new way to imagine Michigan agriculture...food in the summer...fresh pow in the winter!

The new 2010 NEO II's by HQ will be widely available by mid-December. They were supposed to be available before Thanksgiving, but the rollout date has been delayed a few weeks.

What's improved from the original NEO?

- Bigger and more responsive depower
- Quicker and tighter turning
- Faster inflation
- More cells making for a slimmer profile
- Bigger molded chickenloop
- Fewer bridle points improving tuning ability
- New safety system which folds the kite up like a clam in a snap

I like to ride the NEO 11, but it can get hairy on land in winds above 20mph, but the better tunability and bigger depower range of the NEO II , along with the new safety system makes you feel like you won't need to update your health insurance policy or pull out a smaller kite when the wind gets really gusty.

Check out video of the new NEO II and Montana V by HQ:
