Hey Guys - just got back from an incredible long weekend up in Tawas, MI. Brad, Mike and I headed up there last Wednesday night and had three awesome days of riding. The thermals were kickin big time. Saturday afternoon we were down to the 8M kites and still completely lit. If you haven;t made the trip, just quit your job and go...it is worth it. Where else can you ride miles of knee deep, crystal clear water with smokin wind on a 85 degree day? unreal. Got some lake sessions on the huron side and some flatwater sessions in the bay as well.

I finally got the courage...and enough grief from friends to try boosting some jumps...most ended in glorious splashes with varying degrees of height, but by Saturday I actually started riding some of them away, and had some nice air to boot. amazing fun. I think Brad set a new world speed record on his 8M LF Havoc - never seen anyone go that fast on such a small kite. Mike put it all together for the first time and was staying up wind and riding well - big weekend for him.

Met a bunch of the locals up there Rick, Mark-MCK, Brian-GLK and a bunch of great folks from Chicago too. Thanks to all who gave us tips on where to go, ride, stay, etc. I counted 21 kites in the Bay on Saturday, but there was plenty of room.

Major props to Rick for his massive land gap jumps from the bay over to the lake - that was cool. I am not sure that family who was having a nice quiet picnic out by the point expected to see a kiteboarder flying over their heads, but aside from a little water on their food, there was no harm done.

can't wait to go back.

Thanks to Mark B for the heads up text message on the sudden wind change last night. Wind switched from SW to W-NW at around 6, and started cranking up. Four of us hit the Power plant for some solid 12M riding. I don't know about anybody else, but I really needed my kiting fix! Felling 100% better today after getting some riding in. The bonus last night was awesome sunset as we were packing up. Ahhh- Life is good!

So does anybody else (Jerry) find the name of Dimitri's new kite company vaguely familiar?

Hey fellow wind junkies - I am not sure if you guys have been following this or not, but the USA's BMW Oracle racing team has just shipped our contender for the Americas Cup to Valencia Spain. The boat is a 90 foot long and 90 feet wide carbon composite trimaran that has a carbon wing for a mainsail...the first of it's kind. The wing has 625 Sq. Meters of surface area, and with the Gennaker the boat has a total of 1,405 Sq. Meters of sail area. Are you kidding me? The hull also incorporates hydra foils to reduce drag.

OK, so if you compare this to a kiteboard, think about this: The average kiteboard is 136 cm or 1.36M or roughly 1/22 of the 30M hull of this boat. If we scale the sail area by the same ratio that brings us to 63.8 Sq. Meters.

So, this is like kiteboarding on a 136 board with a 64 Meter kite - Holy Crap!

BMW Oracle Racing

There are a number of youtube videos of this thing in action...unreal!

Had a good 12M Avon Power plant session Saturday. Nice waves too. It was a little sparse on riders, just Don, Mike L and myself. Mike got his first board rides on the Nano 6M. Important safety tip Mike, need to keep the board above the water when you powerstroke the kite, otherwise you faceplant and go skimming across the water on your belly...of course you know that now!

How were points West for those who made the trip?
