This Sunday a very sad event happened in south west of France, a kite boarder died.
Here is the testimony of another kite boarder that was kiting at the same time :

early afternoon in the bay of Saint Jean de Luz.

We were 5 in the water, including the victim. Everyone was in 12m and was sailing for at least an hour.

Adrian, who was with a Bandit 12m and directional has been surprised by a sudden and violent gust approx. 40 knots.
Close to the beach, he tried to land his kite, but has been towed across the width of the beach, standing on those legs, hands on the bar.
Arriving at an end, without having activated his safety, he hit the wall between the street and the beach.

His kite went to the zenith and suddently lifted him to 15-18 feets high, passing over the dam and above the boulevard Thiers parallel to the beach.

I think that Adrian was not conscious. he rose, arms along the body, halfway up, he had a gulp and took the control bar in hand.

He rose again and hit the top of the 8 storey building located on the other side of the boulevard, then one of the chimney to go over and land on the roof of a house located behind the building .

Then, I land my kite and run behind the building to see the atrocity of the situation.

Adrian had his harness on him unlike announced by the press and the safety has engaged under the violence of the shock on landing.

I wish to convey my condolences to his family and loved ones. Despite 8 years of practice, I am shocked by the rapidity and violence of this accident.

Adrian we don't know you, but you'll stay forever in our memories.
