It's been a little less than two weeks since we finished our trip to Brazil set up with DKB and Alize Travel. The biggest statistic remains, we had wind 100% of the time. This year we had more wind than last year. I flew a 9m every day, including in the dark, the day we arrived. We rode 8 days straight, with two afternoons lightening up to powered 12m for some. Even Cruz's previous curses were unable to deter the wind gods from smiling on us frommthe time we arrived, eager to ride, and when we left exhausted with our perma-smiles.

The spot that we go to is super cool. It's a huge lagoon on the inside of a barrier island. The wind comes screaming over the barrier island, and you get consistent hair dryer wind by the afternoon. Depending on the tides and time of day the wind slightly changes, but as the tide rises and the day gets later the wind becomes better, maxing out right before sunset (a great time for pictures). You can see it at

www.theflatwatersea.com

We were set up in very simple rooms (beds, toilet, shower, and fan). I was lucky enough to get a mini fridge! If you don't like to kite, there is not much to do, but for the kiter you can ride to your hearts content.

My favorite part was the down-winder we set up to end at our small hotel. We were driven about 15km upwind and got to ride waves the entire way down. The coast line is barren and windswept, beaches as far as you can see, but beautiful, and awesome for kiting. The water was bath water warm, and we rode only concerned about all the sun we were getting. We downwinded to the Secret spot, a nice flat water lagoon. I rode the waves on the outside, and watched the freestyle on the inside. Then we continued downwind on the outside of the barrier island. To get back you could either ride the entire island, and upwind the lagoon (20-25 minutes of upwinding), or walk across the island (1 minute of walking). It took me most of the week to convince others to go all the way to the end of the island, but it was worth it. Super hard wind, super flat water, and waves coming in, totally clean by the offshore gale that was ensuing. It took us about 4 hours total, and was a great way to spend a day.

The people that went were great, there were 15 of us, of all different abilities. Once there you are surrounded by kiters, so much that someone could mistake your gear for theirs at the airport. After riding all day it is pretty cool to sit on the beach, drink some beers, and watch some of the pros throw down.

If you didn't go this year, think about next. Two years of wind, every day is something insane. I haven't been on any other kiting trips with such results. I am putting in hopes for a downwinder from Prea to Jeri next year to ride some more waves. I try to get out here in Michigan, but life usually gets in the way. Down in Brazil though I got two sweet rides, a few sick bottom turns, and a single lip-smacking moment that was the pinnacle of my riding for 2009. All alone, riding on the ocean side, and hit everything just right at the end of the week.

Big thanks to Kyle and Renata for setting everything up so all I had to do was worry about putting sun screen on, keep my board waxed, and decide how fast I wanted to run down the line. Attached are some pics from some of the later sessions in the week. Kyle boosting huge with serious style, Dave Ford executing flawlessly, Cruz super focused, and the African Wonder edging towards his apres kite caprihina......

Enjoy,

Arnot

I'm getting out a nickel and dime jar and going next year. I know I will have at least one down winder wave riding partner. Its hard to pry those hair stylers out of the flats.

Arnot - Nice summary. I've thought about how good the trip was at least once everyday since we've been back.

in reverse order: DC with the place to himself, X going off, Local Donkeys and if you look closely you can see Cruz selflaunching in the background cuz I left him to go check out Donkeys, DC chasing the Donkeys later, Icaroa downwinder, the African Wonder sunning himself with Matt Heller boosting in the background.

Guys,
I guess we forgot that one. Do not tell Renata that I posted it. I am not sure this is the image she wants to give of her country.
But I was in Brazil with you and I saw that thing.
