Yesterday, I ripped my 12m kite on a chimney because I was kiting to close to shore in underpowered conditions. I didn't cause any damage to the home owners property and they seemed genuinely not to mind the incident. I was apologetic and they said it wasn't a problem. This was at Belle River.

I just learned today that two other kiters recently ripped their kites at Metro Beach. One in the trees and one in the rocks. Both kiteboarders are experienced and one of the kiters is an excellent kiteboarder and kiteboarding since 1999.

As we get more experience kiteboarding, I think it's natural to be less safety conscience, but we should all keep a good distance offshore when riding. http://www.fksa.org/viewtopic.php?t=2 says at least 300 feet (100 meters).

It is easy to get a little too comfortable sometimes. A few weeks ago I was riding at Metro underpowered in the bowl and threw an unhooked raley. I was in mid bowl and felt I had more than enough room for this little poke but when I popped I accidentally sent the kite and found myself in a good sized unhooked air. I landed fast and went to hook in but no longer had room to ride under the kite and slack the lines. So now I was right in front the seawall and let'er go. Leash worked, Kite in tree luckily no injuries to me or kite. Kiter apologetic and homeowners understanding.

So anyways an innocent pop in a "safe" area went awry quick. No issue If I was riding way out. Another lesson learned first hand. If y'all see me do something you think might be sketchy, let me know. I will listen and consider the message not taking it as an attack. Maybe this type of attitude and communication can make the beach a safer place for all.

And I wasn't even talking about you. So that's 3 kites torn, and a fourth in the trees (yours).
