Tom S and I have hatched a plan for a course race at Metro Beach Sept 19-20, 2008 (Sat & Sun) that coincides with the Metro Fall Boat Show.

Looking for ideas from all of you and what you think. Would anyone be interested?

Course racing is the new big thing in Kiteboarding and Metro has the perfect set up for it. Tom has called the powers to be at Metro Beach and they are open to the idea. We have to do an official event proposal and get an insurance policy.

Here is a video link to the PKRA Kite Masters course race to give you an idea.

http://video.yahoo.com/watch/1663801/5610789

These are our thoughts so far
Saturday and Sunday event at Metro Beach on the grass.
Swap meet set up for everyone to bring their gear to sell or swap
Area for local kite shops with trainer kites to inform public
Manufacturer Demos all weekend
Multiple heats and qualifiers possibly 10 riders per heat (researching)
Heats can be ran during the preceding week(s) when its windy
Top several winners from each race/heat advance to the final
Follow course set up and rules of existing course races already established
Lake St Clair Crossings to Harsen's, Strawberry Island and Gull Island
Down winders with boat support
GPS MPH runs
Pre & After parties at local establishments

Thinking of Names (Help!)
Metro Kite Masters
Master of the Pooh Tank
Ecole Kite Masters
Lake St Clair Hucka Hucka Kite Jam

Thoughts, Ideas, who would be interested???? Talk to me

John

I'm definitely interested. I can't compete in a freestyle competition, but I sure can try to compete in a race.

I'd also love to cross Lake St. Clair, wind permitting.

Great date with Sept 19-20. Hopefully, the wind will be fairly reliable that time of year. I've got a big work deadline on Sept 7, so I can kiteboard after Sept 7.

I like all of your ideas and can't think of any to add.

I like "Metro Kite Masters" for a name.

I'm looking forward to the race already! laugh.gif

I spoke with the park super today and he was willing to work with us to on the event. However there is one problem that needs to be addressed before this can happen. The swim area is technically open through the end of September, even though the chance of any swimmers using the beach area are highly unlikely we will still have to stay out of the beach and swim area. Typically when we ride down there we go in and out of a designated boat area on the grass. There is plenty of room to rig tons of kites and start the races in that area. As long as we all understand what is expected of us we should be able to get the green light from the park.

I like that one also, it does not limit it to Metro. The name can stay the same no matter where the races are held in Michigan. Grow the concept KiteMastersMI, KiteMastersOH.

It would be sweet if we did a race from Metro to Strawberry that weekend or sometime in the very near future. Capture the Flag, who ever gets the flag at Strawberry wins.
