The Kite Derby is this coming weekend. The weather looks solidly cold for the next 10 days.
I was on the lake Saturday and there was a nice 5" base of packed snow and 8" of ice in the middle of the lake.
Today I had to shovel 5" of new snow out of my drive so there should be new snow on the lake, but the 40 mph winds
may have blown a lot more in to the derby area. There is snow in the forecast the next few days so I'll go out there mid week
for a updated report.

For more info visit http://www.tckitederby.com

We are planning to do some kite races on Saturday and freeride sessions on Friday and Monday.

If you have any questions post them here or drop me a line at info@tckitederby.com

Thinking of staying at Crystal Mountain or Homestead Ski Lodge Thursday and Friday Night. I found a ride with Mark and we should arrive in TC around 2:30pm Thursday. I figure that is in time to get some snow kiting in if its windy, but if not score a twilight downhill snowboarding session. I see no bad days if we stay right at a lodge.

The drive would be about 45 min from the Ski Lodge to the event site, which I don't think is to bad. Night life at the resort should be pretty good and no need to drink and drive around. You don't have to include lift tickets with your room and I think lodging starts at $100 a night. If we get a bigger room or chalet we can just have a KiteUS party at the room.

Thoughts?

OK here is the dealio for Crystal

http://www.crystalmountain.com/winter/inde...tion=winterhome
Crystal 1 bedroom condo sleeps 4 and they have one left $700 without lift tickets for Thursday and Friday night, check out Saturday morning. Breakout is like $175 per person (4 occupancy) for the two days or $90 per night per person.

There is also a 4 bedroom condo, but we would need like 8 to commit to that one.

I have a hold on a standard Hotel room for Mark and I because there was only one left. I have until 5pm to cancel or change it to the condo. Call me if you are interested or PM me.

Crystal has bars, indoor pool and indoor outdoor hot tubs. Sweet setup and you don't have to go anywhere. Not cheap, but your worth it!

Plan B The Homestead Ski Resort

http://www.thehomesteadresort.com/winter/a...mmodations.html

A little less costly and 30 minutes closer to the event site.

Standard Hotel Room $139 for Thursday and $205 for Friday sleeps 2. They have restaurant and bar on site and it does not include lift tickets. Over looks Lake Michigan and Sleepy Bear Dunes are right down the street. Can you say night kiting on the DUNES?
I don't think it is as high end as Crystal, but close.

Talk to me anyone want to in? They have 6 rooms in the same area open now.

FYI: The homestead and crystal aren't very close and both require driving around the lake to get to the event site.
The skiing is much better at crystal, its a much bigger area than the homestead. both are close to small lakes for a quick kite session.

Also most important. Skiing and thus snow kiting is banned in Sleeping Bear Dunes with the exception of the dune climb area and there you have to stay within the climb boundaries. We have talked with the rangers about this and its very important to respect the park's rules. We don't want to get banned. for more info here is a thread http://www.h2okiteboarding.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=693

I have seen sub $40 a night teaser prices on the local hotel signs in TC. So call around you might score a deal.

I will be going up to the TCdurby this weekend from Toledo and have room to take a person or two. I am down with sharing the cost of a room too if anyone is interested. I can't leave until Friday evening around 5:00 and can come back Sunday night or stay up there and ride Monday if anyone wants to. Let me know! Aaron 419-350-0089

Dave, thanks for the information on the dunes!

Plan C Shush Mountain http://www.shantycreek.com/villages/schuss/index.html

$404.07 for Friday and Saturday, sleeps 6 so possibly $70 per night per person. It is 50 miles away from the event site. Indoor and outdoor pool, happening bar right next to the room and ski up to the door. I think this is the one.

Turtle, Schuss is in Belaire and about 90 minutes away from the derby site. The other two resorts are about 30 and 40 minutes away.

If people want a ski option, there is Mt. Holiday which is just a few minutes from the recommended hotels. Its a small community hill but has a half pipe and terrain park. http://mt-holiday.com/ only slighly smaller than the homestead.

Crystal mountain is the only place in the area that I go two its about 3 times bigger than the Homestead.

I hope we have wind and won't need to ride the hill. Remember its a very big ski weekend and the hills will be crowded.

I would be up for splitting up a room if there is any room left in your crew. I won't be there until Friday night because I have to work on Friday. Let me know what you guys set up and if there is any room left. Thanks, Aaron.

Mark and I are locked and loaded for the Kite Derby weekend. We leave about 10am Thursday and are going to try and score a snowkite session in Cadillac or somewhere windy on the way up to Crystal.

Thursday night we have a room at Crystal Mountain and if there is no wind we will be on the hill until they turn off the lights. Friday we will make our way into Traverse City and check into our SWEET Ars condo right on Traverse Bay. I am sure we will meet up with Dave and the TC crew over at Lake Lelanuee for some snowkiting through dark.

Drew from The Detroit Brewing Company has generously donated some Detroit Lager and Detroit Dwarf www.DetroitBrewingCo.com for consumption at the Kite Derby. Find me Friday to share in the love that Drew has given. While supplies last and/or until we are removed from the condo.

KiteUS and adopted the slogan "Conserve Water, Drink Beer!

Nice that sounds like a good idea. I have posted some more info on the details of the event.
I stuck them in another thread here: http://www.kiteus.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6428

We are going to try some races on saturday afternoon. This is an attemp to test out the idea so we can possibly hold water races come summer time. We have done little races with just tossing kite bags on the ice its a blast.

I'll post in a snow and wind report tomorrow, but it looks solid right now.

Its currently snowing very hard up here. We have about 4 new inches just this afternoon. Its going to be epic tomorrow with 15-20 mph winds forecast. Wow I just saw an updated forecast for saturday and its jumped from 10-15 to 20-30 so its going to be another interesting derby. I keep hoping that we'll have a light wind day and we always get strong winds.

I'll be out at the event site sometime before 1pm tomorrow and I'll be out until 5ish. Come out and join us for a ride if you get in to town early. The fresh snow will be great as the wind starts to blow it around it should build up over a foot of fresh powder.

Everyone have a safe trip up.
