Lake Huron

Blair Street pier, Alpena

Wind directions: S, SE, E

This beach sits at the bottom of Thunder Bay running from east to west. It's a small beach so it can fill up with kites very fast, but it does a good job of separating the kiters from the beach goers. Parking lot is small but it's about a 20 feet from the parking lot to the beach. Some times there can be a lot of swimming traffic due to the two public beaches that are a couple hundred yards down from this lunch point. The beach is easy to find; located right in the middle of the town right off of State St. Type of riding is mostly wave riding. There are a lot of sand bars but they deeper than normal. The bay is very big and there are lots of islands and shallows to explore. Riding level: intermediate to advanced

Isakson's Bay aka Misery Bay, Alpena

Wind directions: S, SW, W

There really in no beach here. You lunch from where there used to be water years ago, so the beach is pretty much unlimited. It's a great place to learn. No people or obstructions to look out for. It's shallow and mostly flat, just make sure you don't run yourself onto a sand bar. This place is harder find, located a mile from town off of misery bay road. For parking just use the side of the road. It's a little hike from the road to the water. Riding Level: Beginner to Advanced

North Bay, Presque Isle

Wind directions: N, NW

This spot sits at the bottom of North Bay and runs from east to west. It's about 200 hundred yards long but kind of narrow. The beach is marked as private but no one says anything. However, try not to bring to many kiters at one time. The riding here is incredible on north winds. This spot is known for its big waves and strong north winds. The waves can stack up to 20 feet at times, so this is not a spot for beginners. There can also be a lot of swimming traffic in the summer. This place is located right across the street from the Presque Isle boat harbor. Riding level: Advanced
