Kitestock 04 Recap

Saturday, the Party

I arrived around 7pm on Saturday to find a group of around 50 people that included riders, groupies, musicians and a couple of underage kids trying to drink TimB’s beer. Notably present were the Toronto crew, Master of the Ocean James Otis, Jared Roth, Dave Milan, Detroit Kiteboarding’s Kyle Krawiec, Ocean Rodeo’s Mark Kuban, Slingshot’s Travis Kelly, J Latino and Mike Sloan just to name a few. The Air temps were a little chilly but that quickly changed as Travis Kelly’s band SpermWhale took the stage and rocked the house. More people arrived as the evening went on. The pavilion at Belle River was decked out with Surf Culture Canada toys (Kites, boards, sliders, Kayaks, large screen TV, Stage, kegs, etc.).
Two bands played all night and at times, the dance floor looked like a scene from a Kid Rock concert. The raffle was awesome with lots of free giveaways. Tin Man Dan worked hardest for his prize as he was forced to recite a few lines from his now world famous Tin Man appearance.
Around midnight, the Toronto crew decided to take over and all hell broke loose. Mike and his girl were dancing the night away suspiciously decked out with lots of free raffle prizes! Mika decided to start riding early. Andre was trying to stay away from Nick who was proudly sporting his Pet Grooming glove that he won in the raffle and Andrew was warming up by body slamming people on the concrete floor (he later capped the evening by dropping a 300 pound concrete parking barrier on my toe and breaking it). The very large beer supplies were getting mysteriously lower as Brent Ford took charge of the concession. He denied all the excessive beer drinking charges against him.

The evening was a night to remember, Hats off to the entire Surf Culture Canada Crew (TimB, Chris, April And Trish just to name a few) for exceeding everyone’s expectation and giving true meaning to the term “Beach Lifestyle festival”. Can’t wait for next year’s party.

Sunday, the DownWinder

The highlight of the day was the kite bus (a full size yellow school bus shuttling people between launch and exit locations at Cedar Beach on Lake Erie. I have never seen so many grown kids licking their chops to get on a school bus. The 5 mile downwinder offered flat waist deep water on the inside and small rolling waves on the outside. Most people were on 12m kites. I had so much fun the first time that I did another run joined by Bora and Landis. Everyone finished at Cedar Beach and there were close to 50 kiters and lots of spectators enjoying the dizzying action and beautiful weather. Food, water and RedBull were provided for the riders and guests and once again everyone was blown away with the hard work and organization of the SurfCC crew.

Tim Blanchard did an amazing job of organizing one of the best events I have ever been to in North America. A lot of riders from across Michigan and Ontario and a few from Ohio and Illinois were on hand for the first ever 2004 Kitestock. I have a strong feeling that next year’s event will much larger and hopefully as much fun as this year’s. We just need to find a way to keep Brent Ford away from the beer.
