I wanted to share part of my 2003 spring conditioning experience with all of you. Last year (2003) was my 3rd full year of kiting and I was looking for the "edge" to master aerial manuevers. We have little time on the water here in the midwest as you all know. So last April I hooked up with a local trapeeze and trampoline group that are all ex-circus stars. The idea at first was just to get better "air sense" but more was to come. The trampoline was where things really got interesting. My Russian instructor, Nourbel, was a 50 year old ex-circus star that was eager to help me in this new and wild sport. We hooked up my harness to his safety lines and I gave him instructional videos on kiting. In just a few sessions he was able to perfectly simulate a 10 to 15 foot jump with air time.

We began each session the same way. I was hooked up with traditional trampoline harness and worked on my jumps and flips. After warming up, I hooked up the kite harness, kite bar, and short lines. And then worked on spins and inverted spins. Funny thing, first time on the water after a few sessions, I was able to nail the spins, not just doubles, but triples. And I was able to know where I was in the air, which was my problem from the previous year.

The local circus training group is the Flying Gaonas, 312.742.8259.

Typical costs were about $30/hr for private lessons and private use of trampoline. I found that and hour a week for 2 months was a great spring conditioner.
