2008 North 10 m Rebel - Kite Only.

This is a great kite, fast, stable and capable of big jumps. I've had it winds from 20 mph to 40 mph. The 40 mph session was sketchy, but possible because of the great depower while still controllable nature of the kite.

This is my first kite, so it has been through a lot. Somehow though, it is still in good shape. All the bladder hold air. There are a few pin holes in the canopy.

$300 or best offer.

Hey Sean,

That was great! At the 2:30 and 3:30 marks, I got the impression of how long you were in the air to clear the sand bars. The video from your "Go Pro" was perfect. Viewing it felt like I was there riding with you or remmbering a previous session. As Kyle had said, thanks for the cool perpestive.

Mike,

Last Wednesday there was a really cool group of kiters at Blue Lagoon. I counted 16+ kites on the water at one time. I think it will be similar today.

I'll be there around 4 PM.

Cheers!

Hi Kyle,

The kiters I've talked to really like their 2011 Rebels. From the video, it looks like North tweaked the 2011 design to make the 2012. Is that your feeling?

Can I order a 2012 from you now?

Hi Everybody,

If the forecast holds, Blue Lagoon should be good. I don't have a smart phone, so I can't post a session alert. If it's good, I will find someone to send an alert.

go wind!

I'm glad I dont' have to worry about Man of War washing up against me. blink.gif

My body dragging technique does need improvement. When I'm dragging for my board, I drink way too much lake water with the waves and the spray. I think, because I keep my kite too low (almost stalled on the water at the edge of the wind window). Keeping my kite higher would keep my head more out of the water.

I still want to improve the visibility of my board. The problem is worse when the board is upside down. I've read that the straps add drag so it doesn't move down wind as quickly.

It just came to me! I only have a problem when the wind is really cranking and I'm kiting alone. I'll buy the GoJoe2 and use it in those conditions. It mounts with the grab handle screws, easy enough to install and remove. I'd remove it for most kiting because its big and it looks gay. dry.gif

Thanks for all of your advice!

Hey guys,

This is an old topic, but I was wondering if there were any new solutions. I'm an OK kiter. I'll kite at any opportunity and I don't mind kiting alone. My issue is, I lose my board alot. Luckily so far, I've always found it. For example, last Wednesday at Metro Beach, I kited for 20 minutes, lost my board during a big gust and spent 1 hour finding it. The same thing happened this year twice before, once in St. Ignace (cold water) and once in Cancun. Last fall during a gail, great kiting by the way, I lost my board and before I could find it the sheriff was pulling me out of the water.

Typically the situation is strong wind, waves 2 ft or bigger. I'm moving along fast, get in a nice jump, I'm off balance and maybe kick the board off in the air. Or I'm just cruising along and a wave trips me and because of my speed I travel another 30 ft boardless.

I'll body drag until I eventually get to it (sometimes fast, sometimes an hour) or I'll find it washed up on shore.

I've lost a lot of good kiting time because I can't see the board in the waves!

I won't use a leash. A GoJoe2 looks like it will work, but it will make water launches more difficult. I read one guy suggest using a kid's water wing, which I think will work.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

About kiteboarding close to Cleveland, I know there is a group that ride around Sandusky. They posted a link to a video with Cedar Point in the back ground. The video is great. Try the link below.

This is the beginning of my third season kiting. And I am totally addicted. So, I will take my gear where ever there is a big enough body of water, access to the water and on-shore or side-shore winds. I think that is part of the beauty of this sport, a kite, a board and your ready to go. Cleveland should be perfect with the prevailing westerly winds funneling right up the lakeshore and past downtown.

As the other posts mention, lessons are critical. Bad things happen fast when your hooked to a kite. I feel completely comfortable and independent because of the lessons I took. It's more fun to ride with a group, but I won't hestitate to ride alone.

I hope it works out for you. It takes a bit of patience with the wind and yourself. I consider myself a fast learner and it was 2 - 3 months before I was up and riding. Part of that 3 months was due to my job, my wife and an attempt at a session every two weeks.

I wasn't more specific before because I thought I would get a quick hit. I found a bar, board and wetsuit at Blue Lagoon Wedneday.

If these items are yours please reply to this post with a decription of each or call 248-760-2688.

Cheers.

Several items were found at Blue Lagoon tonight, including a fuzzy, blue blanky that was once a sleeping bag. Inquire here or call my cell phone, 248-760-2688.

Thanks Edd for your thoughts on thermals. I haven't been riding that long and I nievely thought that just a sunny day with cold water would fire them up.

I understand the dynamics that you mentioned and I will watch for them this spring.

I got lucky tonight. There was just enough wind to ride for about an hour with a big kite and big board. It settled me. I was getting twitchy. It had been a week and a half since my last sessions.

Cheers.

I know the forecast doesn't look great, but I thought if thermals start kicking-in this afternoon, it might be rideable. If anyone tries it this afternoon please post here or session alert. I' m in Novi, so It would save me a trip if it is bad.

Thanks!

$150 Cabrinha Icon 138 cm x 37.5 cm Kiteboard

Rock solid board, good condition, normal wear and tear (scratched on the bottom)

I bought it used in 2009. At its oldest, it maybe a 2006 from the internet research that I've done. It appears Cabrinha made the Icon 140 in prior years.

From my experience riding it, the Icon goes upwind really well. Its a stiff board, so all the energy you put into it before a jump comes out in the pop from the water. tongue.gif

If you are interested, please call 248-760-2688. I'm in Clarkston.

Hi,

This will be my third season riding. I'm not an expert either, but I got a chance last fall to compare my current board, Cabrinha 138 Icon to a North 135 Gonzalez(demo from Detroit kiteboarding). I'm about 175 lbs. The differences were remarkable. The Gonzalez rode upwind really well and it has a lot of flex so it soaks up the chop. It was forgiving landing jumps because of the board flex (some say mushy). No real complaints with the Icon except that it had no flex. I actually injured my heel (3 months of pain, enough to cause a limp, then a month of numbness) on a landing partly because of the rock hard board and partly because I'm not that good at landing jumps. wink.gif

As far as the straps were concerned, they were both good. Although I had to repair the Cabrinha straps because they pulled through the mounting bolts to the board.

These boards might be big compared to what you are looking for, but independent of size, I think the board characteristic can be quite different. I guess the best thing would be to demo a board if you have a chance. Also some of the shop owners are quite good at recommending boards.

Good luck.

Hi Edd,

I was out last night with my snowmobile on the small lake that I live on. There is a least 5" - 6" here, but my lake is always the first to freeze. I think by the weekend, most will be solid. Walled Lake was completely iced over early this week.

As mentioned above there is no snow on the ice. I've kited with skis on a bare surface before. It was ok. You just need sharp edges.

Happy kiting. tongue.gif

Julien,

Are you still thinking about kiting at the Goon tomorrow?

I was thinking that the air will be warmer around and above the Lake, hopefully above freezing.

I need to get an early start though, somewhere around 10 A.M. Post a reply or call my cell 248-760-2688.

I want to go, but I think Ed is right. If you water launch or just put your kite in the drink, once it gets into the air, the water will freez on it and the lines. I don't know if that will cause a problem or not. I've never experience it in the water or on the ice, snowkiting. Can anyone enlighten us?

I'm a witness. It was 7:15 PM when I saw a silhoutte of Ed's kite and not Ed, but just the spray from his board. An addict. A mad man. unsure.gif

If anyone found a wetsuit hood from last Friday afternoon/evenings' session at the Blue Lagoon please contact me at 248-760-2688 or bruce.cook@alcan.com. It might have fallen from my truck in front of Kyle's shop. It is a Hyperflex hood with the visor. I know that I look like a dork wearing it, but it makes these cold water sessions so much more bearable. blink.gif

Thanks!

March 2010, I rode north of Cancun at Isla Blanca with Ikarus. They were good and the location was great, huge flat-water lagoon I would not recommend going up there for a sun, fun, partying vacation. There was nothing there and very few people but kiters and fishermen.

Ikarus has a shop and primary location in Playa Del Carmen, south of Cancun. I haven't been there to kite, but the beaches, bars and resorts are top notch.

I got lucky with the wind in March. It blew hard all day, every day I was there. I don't think you can count on that, though.

Ditto, except I wasn't there long enough to see the sunset.

I road to the mouth of the Clinton river twice that morning with the conditions changing along the way. The wind got stronger, less gusty, and the waves got bigger. I hung out with the sailboat guys for a little bit and did sort of a downwinder back to the Lagoon. It was the coolest! tongue.gif

Thanks Sean, from Royal Oak, for the jumping tips, they really worked. I'm a litte beat up since.

edt,

I'm glad you made it out of the water ok. I saw you swim out for your board, way out. In hind sight, I wished I'd borrowed a windsurf board and paddled out to help. I think you are right, there was enough south in the wind to push it to the beach.

I was the guy on the 10 m rebel riding upwind of the launch with you at the end of the day.

Hope you find your board!

Ya, I live on Dixie Lake. How to did you guess that? blink.gif

I drive through Highland every work day to get to Novi via Duck Lake Rd. I'd be happy to car pool to Metro or Blue Lagoon, although during the week I leave from Novi. Weekends though, obviously I leave from Clarkston.

I can ride, thanks to Kyle The first time was just last September on Lake Michigan in St. Ignace. I'm still trying get the timing right for jumps. I can't seem to predict or control wether the jump will be 2 ft. or 6 ft.

The email address that I check daily is bruce.cook@alcan.com I've added yours to my address book. Thanks for all the advice.
