Tonight should be good at Belle River, my house etc.
See if we can't put a downwinder together. Americans, tonight it should be worth
the effort to make the trip.

When they do happen the thermal wind always goes off in the evening. It really is hard to
tell until the day of, since a couple of things have to happen. It has to be a clear day so the sun
can warm up the fields, especially in the evening, blue skies. As well the wind must already
be from the NW through NE direction. The thermals will generally mellow out over the summer as the tempature spread between the water and the air narrows, largely due to the water warming up. The bigger the tempature differential the greater the heating effect of the warm fields heating up the cooler air coming in over the land off the lake. The air is warmed up, acclerates and rises causing that sweet steady thermal breeze.
So where to kite? Belle River or East, my house near Stoney Point and or a couple of small parks in the area.

You really can do some great down winders as there is a spot to access the water about every 6 0r 7 miles out here.

People,

3 out of past 7 evenings there was a very nice breeze that has been good for riding.

Last night went from basically nothing or slightly onshore at 6 pm to about 15 kts at 8 to 8.30 then incrreased to about 18-20 around 9.00.

Comes up around 8.00 pm til past sun down. Usually about 17-18 kts. On one of the nights should have been on 12m. The ususal lofty warm wind and nice sunsets. I've been riding til about 9.45, about half hour after sunset. A little moon lit riding as well earlier in the week.

I'm on vacation for a (ahem) month , riding as much as possible. 519 816 3197.

While lightening certainly can be a concern, personally I try to get off the water well before lightening is in the vicinity.

I'd be more concerned with the unpredictible nature of the winds around a thunderstorm. A great session can be turned into a bit of a nightmare if the wind suddenly rises by 10 -20 kts over a 30 second period.

Bottom line, if you see a Thunderstorm tracking towards you or within 5 miles, its time to take a rest.

Hey,

That was a good post about the water turning over etc. The colder water theory would work well with the cause I always attributed the thermals to, being the land downwind from the beach heats up from the sun. In Metro's case, the massive parking lot heats the air , the air rises, creates a "vacuum" and sucks in the cold air off the water. The colder the air off the water, the bigger the temperature difference with warm air off the parking lot , the stronger the thermal.

I live just down the road from Belle River and we had a great thermal on Sunday night...mother's day, no, I did not ride. It was sunny all day and the fields, many of them still black soil, heated up and caused about a very steady 15-18 knot breeze around six pm til sundown. For the thermal to form, the wind must already be in the west thru north to east direction usually at anything above 5 knots. One very common thing that happens here with every good thermal is that it occurs immediately after the air tempature drops from its daytime high. Ususally this occurs about 5-6 pm. You can ususally count on the wind picking up continuously until sunset. As at Metro the wind is always "up high".

Looks like a good day to ride,

Was out today on 10m. A couple inches of snow over ice, hard and fast.
Wed afternoon should be very good with all the new snow.
Lots of drifts etc

Sun just came out wind at 2.30 NW12-13 kts, expect it will improve
to 17-18 in next hour with sun now creating thermal.

Should be good down here , BR etc tonight. Will be able to ride until
at least 7.. 3/4 moon out before sunset.

You know its funny you should mention the huge T storm. I think that is
what initiated that north wind. It was a spectactular sight as the sun set
next to it!!! I was out for a bit more than an hour from 8.45 to 10.00, the
whole time there was a lot of lightening etc coming out of it. After I came in
I watched it on the radar and it was moving very slowly down the river. I was
concerned about it affecting the wind, ie gusts, change in direction but it
was just one big vacuum and created a nice night.... because it was 25 miles
away.

To answer your questions, the water was fine, first day I wore a shorty, had
a shirt on underneath as well.

Just did a check of local wx. Conditions look excellent for evening session.

If you want a wind report give me a call 519 728 0707 I would think the wind should
be up around 7.00 .

Nice N wind popped up last night just before 8. In 5 minutes went from 3-4 knts SW to
15knts from the north. Moon rose just after the sunset, made for a nice surprise session
after all this dead air.

Conditions Sunday at MB made for some nice riding.

Nice westerly flow right now(noon) , 10kts. With sun out
all day MB could deliver a great sundown session
tonight.

I'm looking out the window at 20kts straight out of the north, low chop
shalloow water, 1-3 feet deep and clear skies. Going to be awesome
around noon once temp comes up.

Went out yesterday afternoon, was good.

Looks like today will be good as well, once temp, goes above 0
warms it up to make surface soft, a little slushy in places but
overall nice riding. I'll be out around 2.00
