Can anyone recommend a kiteboarding spot in North East Ohio that is suitable for beginners to practice?

The "Kiddie Pool" at Conneaut is a good place.

How often you can kiteboard in this area really depends on how committed you to the sport. Many people want to kiteboard but they want to do it on their terms...ie. when they have the time and it doesn't screw up their schedule too much. With this approach you will probably get out once a month if you are lucky. If you determined to get out and willing to drive a few miles you should be able to get out once a week. Sometimes you find a few days in a row and sometimes it won't blow for a few weeks.

As for gear,I would highly recommend buying used to gear to start. First of all you are bound to have some problems leaning which can really takes it toll on kites. It happens to everyone. If you purchase a new kite and tear a hole in it you will really be bummed. Secondly, you may want to kite for a little while, develop you skills and then determine what type and size of kite fits you best. Once you know what works you can sell you used gear and pick up new kites. You will also find once you connect with some locals you will be able to get some input on what is good. Lastly you will quickly find that if you buy some good used gear that you can usually get a few kites that will cover a wider range of wind for the same price or less than 1 new kite. It has been my experience that one kite (even if it is a bow) will not work in all condition. I would recommend a 12m and 16m to start and maybe add a 8m later. Like John said, I would highly recommend using a local shop or someone that you trust to help you pick a your kites.
Best of luck.

It seemed like it was getting a little windy for the 16m. Looks like we are going to get a few days off but hopefully it will pick up soon.

Keep your eyes on this site. We typically are always checking the forecast and wind usually will post if things are looking good. As for the wind....could be great for few days in a row or a bust...just have to wait and see.

What a day at Dusky Point! Amazing. We rode the bay side for a while and then eventually moved to the lake side. The wind was great and lots of it. Next time we will have to find a lauch that is on the lake side rather than in the bay since the water is much more calm outside of the bay. Here are a few pics from the day.

Hello Ohio, I will be passing through the Euclid/Cleveland Area and was looking to ride Wed (tomorrow) in the am, afternoon and/or evening if it is windy. Anyone going to be riding? Where?

I know my normal Ohio Posse will be working for the Man and won't be able to join us until after work. wink.gif

Hook a Turtle up!

John

If the wind is blowing then I am sure a few will show up!

I am new to the forum and the sport. I took a lesson a couple weeks ago an have not been out since. I would like to meet up with some other local riders. Is anyone going out today? Message me if you want to exchange contact info.

-Matt

Matt...if you check in on Kiteoh you will usually see what is happening. The wind has not been good the past few weeks but hopefully it will get better soon. Where did you take your lesson?

A great week in Aruba. The wind has been perfect between 20-25 every day (except Monday). We found a great local spot called Boca Grande which is in the middle of no where and and usually there has been only 1 or 2 other kiters. It has steady onshore winds and lots of waves. We were staying very close to Fisherman's Hut which is gusty offshore winds but you can ride in the morning and at night and is a good place to ride flat water.

Getting some of my best air at Boca Grande!

Laura's first ride at Fisherman't Hut.

A local getting some air at Fisherman's Hut.

It sounds like I haven't missed to much wind in Cleveland so I am hoping to bring some back with me from here.

It was a good turn out with probably about 8 showing up. The wind was very onshore and kind of gusty. The waves where good size which made for lots of fun getting out. In any case always a good time.

Laszlo....welcome to the forum. You will not find much flat water riding here in Cleveland but we do get plenty of waves. Check out the riding spots under this forum and you will see where people are riding.

Yo Brad and Joe - How'd the search for wind go this weekend. I got a text that sounded like you scored Kettle Point.

This weekend is the comp at Tawas. I've got my eye on the conditions, will go if it looks good. Anyone else thinking about it?

It was a great weekend. On Friday we struck out at Belle River so we drove up to Kettle Point on South Lake Huron. When we got there about 2pm the wind was blowing steady at 20. We rode until it died down at about 6:30. Very cool place with nice open beaches and water with plenty of friendly locals. Saturday was a bust so we took the day to drive to northern ontario (Sauble Beach and Olephant) where it was forcasted to have a front moving through on Sunday morning. At about 5am Sunday the wind picked up. By 7:00 we were pumping up the kites on the beach and the wind was good (25-30mph). Joe and hit the water and rode for 2 hours straight until a few others showed up. By 9:00 there were 10 others on the bay, 10:00 it was starting to die down, and by 11:00am were driving 8 hours back to Cleveland. Olephant was a crazy place.... it is a large sandy bay that is about 1-3 feet deep. There is a kicker ramp and a slider in the middle of the bay with plenty of parking on the beach. I attached a link....I will try to post pics later.

Olephant

SCORE!!!!

We had a good crew at the edge yesterday. Battling a beach full of Jet Skis, Boats and general yahoos that made it challenging at times. The wind was a solid 20 most of the day. I think it was me, Saul, Heinz, Don, Luke, Jerry and Brian.

I think Heinz rode for a solid 6 hours straight. My guess is that he can't walk today.

Good stuff. I stopped at Conneaut on my way home and rode with Conneaut Tom for a little. Wind was light so it was tough to stay up wind. I didn't get there until 4:00 and it sounds like it was better earlier in the day.

I did manage to get a good amount of speed on one run while getting blown down wind towards the beach. I ended up getting the board beached in shallow water and did a mini raley...without the board. I think next time I will stay in the deeper water.
