Hey Guys,

I have been asked what is going on with the Kite Derby this year. I have been busy with many other projects and almost didn't do anything for the derby this year. I can't do much this year as I'll be out of town right before, but I do still want to invite you all to come up and kite.

Friday February 12th there is a Winter Beer Fest in TC. Starts at 5pm and runs late. more info at http://www.tcbeerfest.com/winter/

Saturday, I'll be out kiteboarding as normal. I'll post where, but I'm hoping the usual derby spot. come join in.

Sunday, repeat of saturday.

No planned demos, if poeple want to come and organize something thats cool. No races or awards diner.

If you guys want more, I'll see what I can put together.

But come on up to Traverse City for Presidents Day weekend (Feb 12-15), it will be fun I'm sure of that. and if the weather holds we'll have great conditions.

I'm heading up to da UP next Friday to hit Mt Bohemia and score some snow kiting. Any advice on spots in the houghton area? and do you want to join us?

I went to school at tech so I have a pretty good feel for the area and I know that it could be epic riding.

Hey Guys,
Snow conditions are good but none of our lakes close to TC are frozen yet. If they do have ice they aren't safe yet.

There are a few field options, but as they are all private property I don't like posting the addresses on the forums. I can tell you where they are and it would be best to grab a local as a guide. Craig aka baysurfer on my forum is off work and looking for friends to kite with, so look him up.

Also you if you want to try a lake, the only one that might be ready is Manistee Lake, just East of Kalkaska.
http://maps.google.com/?ll=44.783785,-85.0...077162&z=14

Conditions will get better after the next snowfall forecasted to hit around thursday.

I would go out and ride with you guys, but I'm down in SPI with the family. Check out my forum and give me a call if you need help. I'm around unless I'm on the water down here.

2008 Spleene Session 141cm complete - $500

This is a great board. It is the perfect one board quiver. Its great for low winds and moderate winds, it goes upwind better than any other twintip. 95% of the performance of a spleene door in a much smaller package that fits in your trunk.

I’m only selling because I have too many boards. These are great boards. 2008 was the last year before they split the Spleene lines in to the Value and Expensive lines. This is similar to 2009 Hi-tech spleen without the $900 price tag. The value board is a cheap copy with out the detailed design and the carbon.

Good for any skill level and great for beginners.

Please contact me with any questions or for high res pictures. I can be reached at dave@h2okiteboarding.com or 231-715-1426

It was two days of East wind that turned the water over and put it in the low 50's, it was in the 70's. Usual water temps are in the mid to high 60's.

Point Betsie is a neat place to ride, but its not for those who aren't accomplished kiteboarders. It has wind and waves but the shore pound and current eats up newbies. That plus its all dune grass that will wreck your kite not the best mix.

For a full review of this beach check out: http://www.h2okiteboarding.com/H2OKB/Guide...Lighthouse.html

Water levels are up this year and that plus some real aggressive wave action the beach at Point Betsie is half the width that it was last year. This makes about enough room for 4-6 kites and you have to go up the dune to launch. I would say the the section of the beach for kiteboarding has been reduced by 70%. watch out if the waves come up they can wash 3/4 up the beach and your stuff might wash away if you are on the water.

Other beaches in the area have washed out and are just a vertical bank with the dune grass holding back the erosion. There was no beach in a good section between frankfort and PB. I noticed that on a recent downwinder.

QUOTE(Waroo92 @ Jun 25 2009, 12:41 PM) *
I'm going to be spending some time in traverse city soon and i was wondering what might be some good spots for a beginner?

Check out the riders guide on my website. http://www.h2okiteboarding.com/H2OKB/Guide/Guide.html

Petobego and Maple bay (same spot different parking locations) are great. Shallow and friendly. a hike from the parking but worth it. Call me for directions, I'll try and get that one up on the site soon.

The other spots are Esch Rd and Platte River and those are on the website in full detail.

Other spots like Point Betsie you need to be an intermediate kiter with full upwind skills before you ride there.

Give me a shout if you need more help or info.

I'm in South Padre and I know some of the crew is down in Hatteras. Lets compare the conditions and see how they differ. Both offer very similar riding conditions but how is the wind and the temperatures?

I have been down here since the 23rd and its been windy every day so far. 3 days of 20-30 knt winds. 2 days of 15-25. And its warm. Air temps in the mid 80's and the water is 76 in the bay and 74 in the gulf.

How is NC?

Josh,

Thats the wrong time of year for South Padre, its high season and there isn't any cheap place to stay. Its $25-$40 a night right now but much more in the summer as the locals try to excape the heat inland. Also its really really hot here with air temps in the 90's and water in the mid to high 80's.

But it rocks right now. its cheap and the wind has been sweet.

Hi Xavier,

There are lots of options up here in the Traverse City area. I am happy to fill you in on what the details are for a good place to stay and ride.

Unfortunately we don't have vacation rentals on the Old Mission Peninsula (stupid zoning). The bays will most likely be on the cool side in early june anyways. If you want family swimming action, you might want to pick an inland lake or something with a pool. That is all dependent on the weather but as of today the water temp is only 37.

I wouldn't recommend the homestead unless you need an all inclusive restort, you can't kite off the beach there and its $$$$. Do you want to be in or near TC for access to the night life and activites or do you want to be on the beach or lake?

June is a good time to be up here. Mid july to mid august the wind shuts down for the most part.

I'll PM you too.

A wet kite put in the bag won't dry at all. Wet kites can develop mildew and that isn't pretty. Also colors on wet kites can sometimes bleed. (this used to happen, I haven't seen it recently on my gear).

If I have a wet kite it gets laid out in the basement to dry, during the summer I usually try to dry it out at the beach. Leave it pumped up in an area with a gentle breeze and have a brew while it dries.

You don't want to wash it, ever because you'll strip off the coating on the ripstop nylon that makes it water and UV resistant.

If I know that I'm going to ride that kite the very next day I won't bother with drying it out. It will just get wet again. But its rare that I get two days back to back here on the same kite.

Two words: KITE PANTS

Forget board shorts if you want to mandate something how about bringing back Kite Pants. Or maybe some Kite Knickers.
tongue.gif

I hate riding with board shorts over my wetsuit, but one of the perks of kiting up north is no spectators. Its not an issue up here. We are mostly converted windsurfers and you can tell who the new guys are when they come all dressed for a fashion show when coming out to ride.

Where can I find me some kite pants?
