Looks good! What type of material is it made out of? Also I need to get out in the water. I just moved back from school and have been unable to work up the nerve to head out by myself. Is there another online community that is more active? There is always guys over at conneaut but I don't feel comfortable heading out alone still. Also is a full wetsuit necessary now?

I made it from some old windsurfing sail battens. All carbon.

Yes, you will need a full wetsuit still, if not a drysuit.

I just finished a line mount for my Go Pro camera.

If anyone is willing, I'd love to put it on your kite when your out riding. After I have tested it on mine and determined its not going to cause any line wear. It shouldn't. I've given it a rubber coating so it has a lot of static friction, but there is nothing abrasive.

No ice at all on the lake! Looks like its going to be a very early Spring for us, no matter what that groundhog says.

The winds to look for are West winds on a sunny day while the water is still icy cold. At Headlands, these can be the most absolutely pure, butter smooth winds you can get. I've seen it glassy a mile or two out, but near Mentor Headlands beach, its blowing steady. Flat water, maybe no whitecaps at all, but because the wind is so smooth, I've had some amazing sessions there in early Spring.

Even if they don't forecast much wind at all, keep an eye on the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse weather station on NDBC.

I was up at Mentor Headlands, and there was a kiter out on the water.

Are the only two places to snow kite around here edgewater and Eire? I am about in the middle of both. Also what are your thoughts about me sailing a 12 c kite in the snow?

Keith

I sometimes go to Sandusky, but other than that, yes.

I've used C kites on snow. No problem. I suggest putting a fifth line on it to make it easier to relaunch.

From Kiteforums, Tug Hill Snow Kite Rally 2012: Come one Come All

QUOTE("E-Rock")
Announcing the 2012 Tug Hill Snow Kite Rally MLK Weekend, Jan 14th to the 16th

This will be our 5th year hosting kiters from all over the country to come explore what is called the Skyline of the east. Getting over 300 inches of snow on average per year and home to the Maple Ridge Wind Farm, the largest wind farm east of the Mississippi. This is some of the best and consistent snowkiting that can be had in the Northeast proving it isn't necessary to go West to enjoy epic snow kiting. Over the past 5 years hundreds of kiters have come to our festival and it keeps growing.

This year is poised to be the biggest year yet! We will have more sites open than ever with literally 100's of acres of open terrain to explore. We have Jelly Fish Boards, Epic Kites, and Ozone signed on bringing demo's, team riders and giveaways and other companies soon to be announced. Lesson's will be available as well as free into clinics with trainer kites. Besides three days of endless terrain and demo's we will also host a post session party Saturday night complete with pictures and footage from the days riding, a raffle with swag donated by our sponsors, and most importantly a chance to meet fellow kiters and party the night away! This is going to be a great event for both new kiters and seasoned wind addicts a like. There is also plenty of other winter activities to do from snowboarding and cross country skiing to snowmobiling and much more so bring the family and the none kiters along to experience this great location.

For more information on the event, where to stay, etc check out,
http://tughillsnowkiting.com/rally or find us on facebook to get updates on sponsors, events, and conditions as we get closer to the event, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tug-Hill-Sno...193682874051381

Lastly if Lewis County NY doesn't seem like a snowkiting destination check out this video from last years rally!

Hope to see a lot of you there and if you have any questions on the event feel free to ask

I really want to go. Looks like a nice chance to try some interesting terrain, ride with some real serious snowkiters, and have a lot of big fun in a great location. Anyone up for a group trip?

Looks like a chance of snow on the ground and NW winds on Wednesday. I'll be there with skis, or my landboard if there isn't any snow.

Love this idea. Next time you load it up, definitely post some pictures, gotta see the "packmule" in action.

I may do it tomorrow, though its going to be very strong wind, and I may just windsurf from Dempsey's. We'll see.

But it is ready to go.

For those who have their cold water gear, this weekend looks good. The question is, where?

Saturday looks like it may be SW or more WSW. This may mean Conneaut, or if its more SW, I may windsurf at Presque Isle. Either way, I'm going East.

Sunday looks like very strong S wind. That means Sandusky. If I'm going to the sandbar, I have a windsurfing longboard I am modifying with eye bolts so I can strap my kite gear to the deck and sail over to the sandbar from the cemetery on Johnson's Island. Or I may just windsurf from the Dempsey fishing access.

The mosquitos are murderous. I bought two cans of insect repellent, and I may use both up.

Very cool. I'm working on hydrofoils myself. Hoping to produce one that can be ridden twintip.

I had my first day out on the water just now. NE winds at Sims Park in Euclid. No ice to be seen anywhere in the water, but there was still snow on the ground. The air temp was below 30, so I was getting ice on my chicken loop. biggrin.gif

This should be a great sailing year for me, since I just finished winter in the best shape ever. The exercise of kiteskiing about twice a week has kept me in shape and I am now getting out of work at 3:30 every day.

I bet the powerplant would have been great today. Did anyone get out there?

I'd like to keep in touch, know where others are planning to sail. Anyone who wants to exchange cell phone #s, please message me.

Snow on the ground, North wind. All the ice is gone or rotten out on the bays.

Looks like a good day for an Edgewater snow session.

Anyone else out there itching to start posting on this forum?

Chris says there is water 300 yards off the ice at Edgewater. Going finless over the ice to get there?

Hans

Maybe use a snowboard so you have an edge to ride on the ice.

73+. That sounds fast! If you fall, do you just slide? Never been on ice or snow and cannot imagine it.

I wiped out hard after my fastest ever run of 54.6 mph. I hit a snow drift and my skis came off. Yes, you just slide.

QUOTE(Cruz @ Feb 15 2011, 12:22 PM) *
Interesting fact: October 2010, Rob Douglas became the outright record holder for speed on water powered by the wind with 55.65 knots. (wikipedia)

That is equal to 64 mph or 103 Km/h. Your brother, though not wind-powered, was moving almost as fast as a kiter has ever gone at 61 mph.

Speed demons.

Actually, if you go to www.stormboarding.com, you will find that in 2010, Chris Krug went 73.5 mpg on ice, measured by GPS.

I'm hoping to break the 60 mark myself if I can get good ice and wind conditions.

You should post your speed to www.stormboarding.com

My top speed so far this season is 43.8 mph. I'm waiting for some good ice conditions to get some real speed. wink.gif

It turned out to be not a bad day. At first, it was light and SW, then that died, but it picked up from the NE and blew the rest of the day. I spent the whole time fairly well powered up on my 16M Havoc.
