Kite U.S. Forums _ Land / Snow _ GPS rankings 2010

I got my first speed sessions on Presque Isle today. The snow was a bit thick, but I found some big patches of open clean ice and managed a speed of 41.3mph on my 12M Slingshot Turbo Diesel and my long skis. I just sent my GPS log file to Stormboarding.com

35.2 MPH on Walled Lake on Sunday 10th Jan 2010. HQ Montana 2 9.5m with skis. Snow covered.

Any ice slick/smooth/long enough to use skates?

The ice tends to get smoother later in the season. Once the lake effect snow machine shuts down because the lake is ice covered, Presque Isle doesn't get much more snow. The occasional rainy day and warm spells melt and re-freeze the snow, so you get a nice fairly smooth surface.

30.5 MPH on Maumee Bay

Saul,

Would you please give me a shout if and when we get those conditions? Thank you.
I have yet to go out in the winter and do not own downhill skis or a snowboard. I imagine crosscountry/skate skis would be a bad idea!

No, they wouldn't be. I've seen kiters using cross country skis.

I just posted a new top speed to Stormboarding.com

The ice at Presque Isle is fairly smooth, and is sure to get even smoother after this rain today, and once it re-freezes when it gets cold again Monday night. Thats where I was this morning, before the rain moved in. 8M Turbo Diesel.

New top speed for me:

54.6MPH!!!

There's lots of clean ice out there, and it was very slick today. Just careful about some rough spots and snow drifts. I hit a snow drift on my first speed run and crashed. And that was on my fastest run of the day. Lost both skis, ended up sliding 260 yards on my butt downwind trying to get back control of the kite.

I learned a few things about self-rescue out on the ice today.

Make sure you bring an ice screw with you. Or just a corkscrew. Ice screws are threaded hollow tubes, and if they get full of ice frozen in place, they won't work. I had trouble like that since it was my second kite crash of the day and used the ice screw once already. If you have that problem, the thing to do is hold it under your arm pit for a while to warm it, then blow the ice out.

I also need some kind of spikes on my ski boots, since it was impossible to control anything once my skis fell off.
