Kite U.S. Forums _ Southeast Michigan _ Bring a Rake

Posted by: KyleK Jun 14 2008, 08:43 AM

Hey Everybody,

we all love riding at Metro but we all really hate walking through the sludge barrier at the mouth of the launch. The park used to bring in a loader, drive it into the water, and scoop out the buildup. Then the loader got stuck in the water so they dont do it anymore. Windsurf Walt keeps a rake in his van to clean the barrier. Im thinkin that we should do the same. Lets bring rakes out if possible and if there is not enough wind we can scoop out fish and weeds! Or maybe somebody has extra ones that we could stash in the weeds?

Together, we can make a difference!

well I forgot the rake and wish I had it yesterday. the "hell zone" at the walkout is worse than ever. Im not sure if the park did some digging to try to help but now it is DEEP in the nasty, oh so nasty. and now there is a new warm cottony weed out there, bright green and slimey.

I think rakes will help alot if we're diligent. In the meantime what are other solutions? I have heard the following:

a. clear a path through the trees/scrub to create another access to the bowl (although it gets greasy down there too).
b. build a dock type thing to walk over the 'hell zone' out to the super clean water.
c. forget about metro from June 21 until Sept 21 - spring and fall only
d. get the turtle to get a "wonder wind apparatus" from a sponsor so it blows 20kts + everyday and worth the nasty walk
e. hook up a power washer at the pavillion to blast off the physical evidence although the memory and stench are burned into your mind
f. bring in a million yards of sand and dirt to make a little point at the walkout - convex yes! concave no!

I know with all the brainpower at the beach somebody has the solution. Jerome? Purewind? BottomDweller? 3rdGradeTeacher?

not sure but I will bring my rake.

Bring some ice to keep this thing frozen ?

Posted by: purewind07 Jun 29 2008, 08:25 PM

i say we all pick a day and work on the entrance.
we need alot of people cause all the weeds and dead fish are heavy.
a guy like me cant lift more then 40 pounds so we need atleast 3-4 more guys.
i can bring rakes and shovels potentially some sand to make a sandbox type thingy to walk over.
ill be there on a light wind day if anyone wants to help out

Pure Wind, pull those strings again and get them out there with the sucker!

It seemed all good last week but yesterday it was looking bad again.

I will see what i can do on a light wind day again.
I will talk to one of the park rangers i talked to and see if they will just leave the sucker over in the bowl and give me the keys to the sucker. i will be out there everyday if i have to keep metro parks cleaned.
Its kinda pathetic that the jetski launch is always cleaned and we have to walk in dead fish.

That's sexy. What a difference. It is kind of like trimming nose hairs or pubes though. Once and a while just isn't enough. Constant maintenance is the key.

All kidding aside, a small dock would rule, if not add another technical feature to an already menacing access point. Let's see:

1. Launch located in a wind shadow...check.
2. Large trees flanking a narrow water access...check.
3. People with shotguns in the bushes during hunting season...check.
4. Large boulders and structures downwind from take off...check.
5. Sludge and nastiness...check.
6. Grown men running around with wetsuits and no board shorts...check.

Adding another solid object to "tightrope" into the water?...sounds good to me.
