Kite U.S. Forums _ Northern Michigan _ PB Session Tomorrow 9/23

Posted by: H2OKiter Sep 23 2007, 06:19 PM

Tomorrow is south 15-25 and it looks like a classic Point Betsie day. For those new to NW Lower Michigan, Point Betsie is our catch all place for wind in its sector of the coast. Its just north of Frankfort and a sweet place to ride. The launch is just south of the Point Betsie Lighthouse at the end of Point Betsie Rd off of M-22.

Point Betsie is a great spot for intermediate to advanced kiters. Its not beginner friendly due to a narrow launch, large shore break and swift current. Beginers should try Elberta or another launch with a larger beach and a better down wind outlet. If you go down wind at Point Betsie you go out and around the lighthouse breakwall and are stuck a ways offshore and will have to work towards shore in the wind shadow of the lighthouse.

The locals should all be at the point tomorrow for a board meeting. I'll be out if I can swing the drive.

The forecast was calling for a solid 20-25 and we didn't get that. I got out to the point and there were a couple of guys riding 12m's under powered then it shut down as a bank of clouds rolled in. About an hour later the sun came back out and the thermal kicked in and saved the day. I was bumming because it was an average point day and not epic like my last 3 sessions out at Lake Michigan. it was blowing 15-25 and the waves were 1-3', small compared to the 30knt 6'-8' days we have had recently.

Now I'm just waiting for a big blow from the North so we can go ride 10'+ monsters at Leland. I love fall you can actually be a wind snob and still be ride 3+ days a week in Michigan. biggrin.gif
