Kite U.S. Forums _ Open Dialog _ Introducing www.SessionDog.com

Posted by: Turtle Dec 28 2007, 10:06 AM

Another collaboration project that is almost ready to be launched! Rob (Wolfie, Wolfman, Wolfinator) and I have came up with a great idea to build a program to track everyones kiteboarding sessions on land, snow and water. Rob has been diligently building the database program from scratch to be put on the back end of our discussion forum.

I will let him tell you more about it, but I have seen the screen shots and it is going to be the Slickest thing around. Riding spot, date, kite selection, wind speed, wind direction and hours logged are just some of the cool drop down menus you can fill.

Our vision is to compile this data and have some interesting facts come out of it. Who rides the most on water, snow, and land, Who rides in the most extreme conditions, and Who only rides during certain conditions (light, moderate, high winds) are just some ideas. I think titles can be established with catchy nicknames like "Kite Slut" - only rides when there are 12M conditions (Lando) laugh.gif . You will have the ability to keep your record private or included in the compilation.

Keep your records for 2008 so you can back load the data.

Rob, tell us more!!!

hey Turtle, I thought this was top secret tongue.gif

well guys, things are coming along nicely... should have a beta version available for folks to start playing with in January. The hope was to launch Jan 1st, but holiday stuff has pulled me away from working on the site a little more than expected...

I don't want to divulge everything before we launch, but basically it works like this:

1. you set up your profile, which includes the kites, boards, wetsuits, line extensions, and other goodies that you own. These items are then available to you each time you log a session in the form of drop-down select boxes. If you happened to borrow someone's gear during a session, sessionDog will allow you to enter that when you enter your session as well.

Your profile also includes your weight, which is cool because then people can ask sessionDog which kites are being flown by riders within a specified weight range, for a given set of wind conditions. Also, you can "hide" your weight such that it isn't directly associated with the user's name.

Another feature under the profile section is the ability to set goals. Then each time you ride you'll have the option of specifying if one of these was met. At the end of the year you can look over your sessions, see how many of your goals were met, and when you met them.

In addition to setting goals, you can store the skills that you have.

2. each time you ride, you login to the site and enter your session details. You start by entering the date and location and go from there. There are drop downs that allow you to select the wind-range, the temperature, water conditions (flat, chop, waves), etc... You also select the gear you used for those conditions and whether or not any goals were met. There's a text field for entering comments about the session, and an attachments button to allow you to upload photos, etc.... Most of the fields are optional so you don't have to know all of the details if you don't want to... you could just enter text, for example. The wind range allows you to specify if you're guessing or if you actually measured the wind, which will be useful for queries into the database later. Also, I'm working on importing wind data from noaa and/or anemometers capable of storing wind data and uploading it to a PC.

It may sound like a lot, but it only takes a few seconds to enter the data. A lot of work is going into making this part intuitive and easy....

3. you can ask SessionDog all kinds of questions. How many times did I ride this year? Where did I ride this year? How many times did I fly my 6m Assault? Who rode the most this year? Who knows the most tricks? The list is endless once the data is there....

If anyone has any questions or suggestions let us know!

Thanks for the suggestion batman! this might be possible... I'll definitely keep it in mind as I'm building the site and we'll see if we can get it in or not.

Thanks!

I think that is really covered in the Forum under "Where you riding on the Great Lakes". Since it may not happen I don't think we need to make it part of the program. We do want to keep the forum as the hub and the session program an add on.

Nice job on the summary Turtle! It matches very well with the fields that we currently have.

Nobody needs to add anything else, but two things can be added if desired:
1. if line extensions were used, you can record the length of the extensions
2. surface conditions: shall we say "Wet Powder"? Choices include "Wet Powder", "Dry Powder", "Packed Powder", "Hard Packed", "Ice", and "Slush".

Hope you guys had a good session! I tried on Whitmore lake, but got skunked angry.gif

Good idea posting the details here. Keep it up and we'll move the info into SessionDog as soon as we can!

Board: Lib Tech Travis Rice Magnetraction
Ride Time: 1.5 hours
Goals Met: First time snowkiting!!!!
Session Rating: 5/5

Comments:
This was my first time kiting since tearing my MCL on October 30th. It was awesome to be riding again, granted snowkiting feels very different to me than water kiting. The conditions were really good for my first ever snow session - I had to work the kite a little, but that was okay. I got a little air off a jump that Amer built (the highlight of the session), but then quickly dialed it down so as not to push my knee too hard, which by the way wasn't bothered at all. Amer's Ozone Frenzy is absolutely amazing. It's super easy to self-launch, land, and control. The hand break, which causes the kite to gently fall from the sky and land in a perfect "relaunch position", is unbelievable. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to self-launch my 14m Havoc in winds this light, plus I would have had to pump, run the lines, and deflate... I'm definitely going to consider buying one of these for the winter... This session gets a 5 because it was my first time riding since my injury and it was my first time ever snowkiting!

Rob....lets get this thing up, lol I can't keep track of all my sessions. Well, actually I only got one...

I scored a decent 17m session today

S light wind on/off
some other guy showed up later around 4:15 but rigged at the sailbot launch, while I was at the beach
solid session despite light wind and being alone
-17 relauncehs awsome on snow

Stoney is all torn up now, though it was nice to make new tracks...

Comments:
Second time snowkiting.. had a blast! conditions were pretty slick because the lake had just frozen Saturday night and we had only gotten about 2 inches of snow.. a lot of the snow had piled into 3 to 4 inch "snow pillows" leaving about 25% of the lake exposed as ice. the magnetraction board works well. my pads work well too - used elbow, knee, and protec hip pads, which really saved my tail bone a few times - would never ride on ice without these... Rode with Amer, Tom, and Alex.. sweet session!

Posted by: wolfie Jan 23 2008, 07:41 AM

hey guys,
just wanted to let you know that you can get the wind conditions for previous days, which can be useful for logging your sessions - it might not be exact for your riding spot, but it will probably help to get numbers that are in the ballpark - especially in the winter when thermals aren't as big of an issue..

just go to weatherunderground.com, type in the zip code or city, scroll down and look on the left for "History & Almanac", select the date under "Detailed History and Climate (KARB)" and click go.

Snowboard, Lib Tech Travis Rice Magnetraction

light wind, sticky snow, not so great...

OBX Sessions - it's all a little bit of a blur, but I think this is how it went down:

4/11/08
Cape Hatteras, NC
Kite Point
74 degrees, sunny
S 10-20 (started light and built)
2.5 hours
14M LF Havoc
Glide, 5'8" Tim Carroll surfboard strapless, 136 LF recoil
Session Rating: 3/3

4/11/08
Cape Hatteras, NC
Downwinder: Mile Marker 53 to Chimney House (2 miles)
74 degrees, sunny
S 15-20
2 hours
10M LF Havoc
136 LF recoil
Session Rating: 3/3

Comments: Amazing sunset session with Andrew Tartaglione. The wind was rock steady.

4/10/08
Cape Hatteras, NC
Downwinder: Chimney House to Kite Point Beach (9 miles), then Chimney House to Mile Marker 53 (2 miles)
60 degrees, overcast
N 15-20 (a little gusty)
6 hours
6M LF Havoc
5'8" Tim carroll surfboard strapless
Session Rating: 3/3

Comments: Another great downwinder with Andrew Tartaglione. Ted fueled us up with some delicious ham sandwiches at kite point and talked us into doing another 2 mile downwinder so he could ride! He did amazing - 3rd or 4th time riding and he did the 2 mile downwinder with us!

4/9/08
Cape Hatteras, NC
Downwinder: Mile Marker 53 to Kite Point Beach (7 miles)
60 degrees, overcast
N 15-27 (a little gusty)
4 hours
6M LF Havoc
5'8" Tim carroll surfboard strapless
Session Rating: 3/3

Comments: Started this one with Andrew and Ted. Ted broke down after a couple of miles and Andrew pulled his safety about halfway through because he was over powered on his 15m Air rush. The 4 and a half mile solo downwinder was pretty satisfying trip.

4/9/08
Cape Hatteras, NC
2nd Downwinder: started at mile marker 53 and headed for Kite Point Beach, but didn't quite make it (~ 5 miles)
60 degrees, overcast
N 15-27 (a little gusty)
2.5 hours
6M LF Havoc
5'8" Tim carroll surfboard strapless
Session Rating: 3/3

Comments: Started this one with Andrew and Ted. After about 5 miles my body just couldn't take it anymore so I went into shore and caught a ride to kite point. Ted and Andrew made it and this was only Ted's 3rd time riding!

4/8/08
Cape Hatteras, NC
Kite Point
54 degrees, overcast
N 10
2.5 hours
14M LF Havoc
Glide
Session Rating: 3/3

Stayed up wind sometimes... got downwinded and walked the beach at others. Still fun though...

4/7/08
Cape Hatteras, NC
Kite Point
54 degrees, overcast
N 15-20, gusting to 26

rode, but don't remember where or what!

4/6/08
Cape Hatteras, NC
Downwinder: Mile Marker 53 to Kite Point Beach (7 miles)
60 degrees, cloudy
N 10-14
14M LF Havoc
136 recoil

Took a lesson with Tommy and worked on back rolls and jumping. Wind was a little light though, so it was pretty tough...

The entire trip was phenomenal - rode every day!
